Historical Places to Visit in and Around Asheville

If you’re seeking some great historic sites to visit while in Asheville, check out some of the places on our list.

1.     Thomas Wolfe Memorial

The Thomas Wolfe home, built in 1883, now serves as the Thomas Wolfe Memorial. The rambling Victorian building he grew up in (his mother’s boarding house) was immortalized as “Dixieland” in his famous autobiographical novel Look Homeward, Angel. The novel has never gone out of print since its publication in 1929, keeping interest in Wolfe alive and attracting visitors to his historic home at 48 Spruce Street in Asheville.

2.      Carl Sandburg Home

Writer, poet and Pulitzer Prize winner Carl Sandburg died on June 22, 1967. After which his wife Lilian donated his home to the state of North Carolina to become a National Park. The park’s vast historical and cultural resources include 264 acres of pastures, ponds, small mountains and hiking trails, as well as a total of fifty structures, including the Sandburg’s residence and goat barn. Books, personal belongings, awards and photographs highlight the 22 years of his life Sandburg spent residing at Connemara in Flat Rock.

3.      St. Mary’s Church

St. Mary’s was constructed in 1914 in a cruciform plan in an English Gothic Revival style, incorporating the “correct” ecclesiastical style of Edwardian Anglo-Catholicism.  Prominent local architect Richard Sharp Smith designed the building and much of the interior furnishings. St. Mary’s is the only Anglo-Catholic church in North Carolina.

4.      Riverside Cemetery

The Riverside Cemetery dates back to 1885 and encompasses 87 acres of rolling hills and flower gardens overlooking the French Broad River.  Riverside is the burial place of many of Asheville’s most notorious citizens including Thomas Wolfe, William Sidney Porter (better known as O. Henry), Zebulon B. Vance, Thomas Patton and confederate generals James Martin, Robert B. Vance and Thomas Clingman.

5.      Grove Arcade

Dr. Edwin Wiley Grove, a wealthy patent medicine manufacturer and real estate developer had the Grove Arcade built between 1926 and 1929, as a massive commercial mall with covered pedestrian thoroughfares and rooftop terraces. It was the most ambitious project conceived by Grove. During WWII the Arcade Building was occupied and modified by the Federal government and eventually housed the National Climatic Data Center until the 1990s. Today the Arcade’s Tudor Gothic Revival style is one of Asheville’s landmark architectural showplaces.

6.      Church of St. Lawrence

The Church of St. Lawrence was designed and built by Rafael Guastavino, an architect and builder who came to Asheville to work on the Biltmore House in the mid-1890s. After completing his work at Biltmore, he sought an alliance with friend and architect Richard Sharp Smith to design the Spanish Renaissance Revival Church of St. Lawrence in the early 1900’s. Construction was completed in 1909.  The entire Church is built of tile or other masonry materials. The center dome is reputed to be the largest freestanding elliptical dome in North America. The churches basilica interior features Spanish woodcarvings dating back to the mid-17th century.

Our Pinecrest Inn has its own historical roots dating back to Asheville’s boom in the early 1900’s.  The 1905 English Tudor style B&B, is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. In 1913 Richard Sharp Smith, the lead architect for the Biltmore Estate was commissioned to design an addition to the house, making it even more significant. The name ‘Pinecrest’ was officially deeded to the house in 1928. Today the elegant home operates as an Asheville Bed & Breakfast located in the historic Montford district. New Edison at Grove Park Inn Delivers Innovative Dining

In late July of this year the Omni Grove Park revamped its in house restaurant and opened the new Edison Craft Ales + Kitchen. The restaurant’s new look is eclectic and lively, with much of the ceiling light provided by Edison-esque looking light bulbs – nodding to the Inn’s history; Thomas Edison was a regular summer guest there in the early nineteen hundreds.  One thing that hasn’t changed is the scenic views and amazing sunsets at this top-notch restaurant overlooking the city of Asheville. The restaurant has an enclosed section as well outdoors seating. The restaurant features large fireplaces and comfy couches and chairs to lounge inn as you sip wine or eat dinner.

Although the look and the name are new, the food and spirits featured on the menu continue to honor the local flavor and attitude of the region. The chic but casual restaurant carries ten North Carolina beers on tap, including several local ones. If you’re a beer lover, don’t miss the Centennial Pale Ale with a bit of hoppy spice and citrus undertones. The house beer is brewed exclusively for the Grove Park by Asheville’s own Highland Brewing Company.

If you haven’t been yet, you’ll quickly discover that the Edison’s menu is full of southern comfort food with a distinctively Ashevillian twist.  The oysters and cured meats are all fresh and fantastic with many items sourced locally. Everything we tasted was delicious without being overwhelmingly large or over the top. The deep fried egg with lamb and the prawns with red chili marmalade were both delicious! So the next time you venture out on the town to try something new in Asheville, put the Edison on your to-do-list. It’s well worth the trip.

Our Favorite Vegan Hash or Veggie Hash with Egg Recipe

It seems like I do a lot of blogging about food but what can I say, I have a passion for food, especially fresh from the farm food. Last week I had many guests with certain dietary needs. Rather than make a bunch of ingredient substitutions or several different breakfasts, I decided to be bold and make one breakfast that would make everyone happy. And when I saw the beautiful variety of potatoes my friend and go-to local organic farmer, Alex Brown from Full Sun Farm had at market…my mind screamed a veggie hash with an egg or not on top.

I grabbed a hand full each of gorgeous Green Mountain, German Butterball, Papa Cacho and Russian Banana Fingerlings, some yellow onions, Red Rosa di Milano onions, red peppers, fresh basil and divine Cherokee Purple tomatoes. Unfortunately, Alex did not have any kale so I had to visit our local grocery store for some baby kale, assorted mushrooms and avocados. I also picked up some seeded bread from City Bakery for toast. I have found that not everyone is a fan of mushrooms, so I always check and if there is an objection, I just move some of the sautéed onions to a separate pan continue with the recipe omitting the mushroom step.

Honestly, I couldn’t wait to make breakfast the next morning. There are some meals you just get really excited about and this one is by far one of my very favorites. It also gets raving reviews from my guests. I am including the recipe and some pictures with this blog. Here at our Asheville Bed and Breakfast we are happy to share all our recipes with our guests. Keep in mind, I have done my best to estimate the measurements, but really I just eye it.

Although I had 8 folks for this breakfast last week, I have reduced the recipe to 4 servings.

  • 2 1/2 lbs assorted small potatoes cubed
  • 1 red pepper diced
  • 2 small onions sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • Several sprigs of chopped thyme
  • 8 oz or more assorted mushrooms
  • 1 bunch baby kale or any green leafy vegetable (stem removed)
  • 4 eggs (or not for vegan recipe)
  • 2 avocados, sliced
  • Tomatoes

Veggie Hash with Egg Breakfast

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Wash and cube potatoes and place on large rimmed baking sheet. Generously drizzle potatoes with olive oil and salt and pepper. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, turning half way through. While potatoes are baking, sauté onions, red pepper, garlic and thyme in a little olive oil. Once onions are soft add the mushrooms. Once mushrooms are cooked through add kale and cook for just a couple of minutes or until kale is lightly wilted. Remove from heat. Toss potatoes and veggies together. Add a fried, poached or scrambled egg to the top for those wanting the protein. Garnish with avocado and tomato.

Recommended Hiking Trails in Pisgah National Forest

The Pisgah National Forest covers over 500,000 acres of forested land in and around Asheville. Avid hikers and bikers alike will discover hundreds of miles of trails to suit any taste. If you haven’t explored the Pisgah Forest, then you definitely need to. Some of the Pisgah trails most favored by locals include those at Max Patch, Hot Springs, Bent Creek, Mills River, Graveyard Field and many others. For a quick guide to the best trails based on features, or ease/difficulty of hike visit http://www.hikewnc.info/besthikes/.

A favorite of our Asheville Bed & Breakfast is Max Patch – a good 45-60 minute drive West of Asheville, but well worth the trip.  kids_hikingMax Patch Mountain offers some amazingly scenic hikes, appropriate for children and older individuals. It highest elevation reaches 4,629 feet. The grassy summit is not the highest peak around, but it is considered by some to be the “crown jewel of the Appalachian Trail”. If you want a relatively easy hike to Max Patch, take the moderate, 1.4 mile Short Loop trail. For a more difficult hike, continue another mile on the Long Loop trail. The long range mountain views are simply breathtaking.

For easier hiking just 15 minutes from downtown, head south to Bent Creek. The Bent Creek trail system offers great hiking and mountain biking options, a campground, mountain lake with sandy beach (Powhatan Lake), picnic area, fishing pier and a family recreation area. A great place to spend the day or just take a refreshing walk around the lake to enjoy the beautiful Dogwoods and Mountain Laurel. Bent Creek is adjacent to the NC Arboretum and charges a $5 per vehicle entrance fee to the park.

If you’d rather hike on the north end of town, head up to the trail system in Hot Springs. The famous Appalachian Trail runs right through town. From the trail head, take a hike up to Lovers Leap Ridge for spectacular views of downtown Hot Springs and Spring Creek. The scenic town is also home to natural, hot mineral springs for which the town is named. Take in the therapeutic spring waters after your hike by renting your own private mineral bath at the Hot Springs Resort and Spa and follow it up with a relaxing massage. Now that’s my idea of a satisfying hike!

WNC Farmer’s Markets Delight Visitors from Near and Far

woman at marketAsheville is synonymous with many things…fresh air, great food, live music and farmers markets just to name a few. The mountains of WNC are home to over two dozen farmer’s markets, tail gate markets and organic farm markets.

No matter what day of the week or time of the year you visit Asheville, you won’t have a problem finding a market with plenty of hand made and locally grown foods to offer. A personal favorite of our Asheville Bed & Breakfast is the Montford Farmer’s Market open May through November from 2-6pm. This mid-week market is convenient to our Inn and close to downtown. This producer-only market provides a wide assortment of sustainably grown fruits and vegetables, flowers, baked goods, wood-fired breads, meats, local made cheeses and hand crafted wares from local artisans.

Don’t have a lot of time or want to catch a market in town? There are many smaller tailgate markets available with just about anything you can imagine from local grown foods and live music, to hand-made clothing from recycled materials. You can find one or more in just about every town. The French Broad Food Coop Tailgate Downtown Market, North Asheville Tailgate Market, Black Market Tailgate Market and West Asheville Tailgate Market are just a few of the many.

Another good option that’s always convenient is the state-owned WNC Farmer’s Market. Open year round, seven days a week the mostly indoor market offers quality fruits and vegetables, mountain crafts, jams, jellies, pickles, slow roasted peanuts, sourwood honey, fresh baked breads and dozens of other farm fresh items. The market is so large, it can easily become a half day trip for avid market goers. Inside is a deli that offers lunch and ice cream so you won’t leave hungry. There’s also an open-air market space where farmers, furniture makers, basket weavers and local vendors of all kinds can display their home-grown and hand-made wares. The market is open daily 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., April-October; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., November-March.

So many markets so little time! Don’t know which market to visit or when? The Appalachian Sustainable Agricultural Project publishes a Local Food Guide which lists all the farmers markets in the region.

Use it to help locate the freshest locally grown fruits, vegetables, christmas trees, ornamental plants, herbs and flowers. Top 3 Friday Night Events in Asheville

Every Friday night this summer starting May 24th, Biltmore hosts its Fridays After Five event. Held at the Antler Hill Village and Winery, it’s the perfect way to kick off your summer weekend whether you’re a local or a visitor.

This family friendly event has something for everyone. You can bring your own picnic, or grab a hot dog, cotton candy or snow cone in the village. Parents and kids alike will groove to the beat of live music, while couples enjoying a romantic evening out can grab a quaint table for two at Cedric’s outdoor patio. Don’t forget to cool off at the notorious Biltmore Creamery with an old-fashioned milkshake, ice cream or float at the end of the evening. Experience this free, funky event every Friday night this summer. Impromptu drummers and dancers welcome, so bring your happy feet and your Ukulele and head on down.

Asheville, North Carolina continues to live up to it’s title of Best Vegetarian-Friendly Small City.  Asheville is a vegetarian, gluten free and vegan diner’s dream. Starting in downtown Asheville and heading north along a 2 mile stretch of road, locals affectionately refer to as the Merrimon Shuffle, you will find two exclusively vegetarian restaurants; the Laughing Seed and  Rosetta’s, Posana, a gluten free restaurant, Plant, a vegan restaurant and VegHeads, a vegetarian drive thru. Only in Asheville.  Along the way you will also go by Greenlife  Grocery store which features everything from “simple vegetarian to “raw” cuisine in a mostly local food approach. And this is just the Merrimon Shuffle. You will find many more  food co-ops, grocers and other restaurants that fulfill the needs of any dining desires.

Asheville has built itself into quite the vegetarian-friendly city, and continues to add more animal-free  dining options.  The Laughing Seed, a perennial favorite  and well-known to visitors and locals alike calls itself a global fusion vegetarian restaurant and offers an eclectic vegetarian menu.  This Asheville tradition also serves organic, seasonal, farm-to-table, vegetarian cuisine with an international flair.

The new kid on the block, Plant, another farm-to-table  concept brought to Asheville by the partnership of Jason Sellars (the former chef at The Laughing Seed) and Leslie Armstrong and and Alan Berger (former owners of the best independent video store in the city — Rosebud.  Plant has only been open a short time, but is already drawing a sophisticated crowd who appreciates the quality of the food, prepared from fresh local ingredients. The farm-to-table concept is strong in Asheville and continues to grow, benefiting our local farmers and the restaurant clientele.

Plant, also a completely vegan restaurant, describes itself as “A restaurant with roots; sophisticated scratch-made food from the earth.” Nothing is served that is an animal or a by-product of any animal. This can be quite unnerving to the uninitiated, but trust us — your taste buds will revel in the new experience.  Our favorites were the Mushroom Risotto, the smoked Portabello and the truffle fries (of course).  We do hear that the Reuben and the Peppercorn encrusted Seitan are out of this world.

Nothing Like a Fresh Cut Christmas Tree – Let this Asheville Inn be your Guide

We are so fortunate to live in western North Carolina, the number two state in the country for growing Christmas Trees! There are 3 farms within 30 minutes of Asheville and many more as you drive toward Boone.  One of our family favorites is Sandy Hollar Farm located in the beautiful Sandy Mush area about 30 minutes north/west of Asheville.  Every year we head out to Sandy Mush, which  also happens to where our good friends and well known organic farmers, Vanessa and Alex Brown call home.  Our kids always enjoy the hayride up to the meadow passing llamas and goats,  where we pick  and cut down two Frasier Firs — one for our Asheville Bed and Breakfast and one for our private home.  Each of the farms listed below offer hay rides and other holiday festivities. Rounding out the family outing, Santa often shows up so the kids can sit on his lap and tell them what they would like for Christmas. Enjoy a trip back to your own childhood by selecting your own Christmas tree from among acres of beautiful Fraser firs. Sometimes Mother Nature provides a light dusting of snow to make your visit even more magical. Their specialty is high-quality Fraser Fir trees. They cut your favorite tree, bale it and tie it on your vehicle. Located in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains near Maggie Valley & Waynesville. They offer paved access, plenty of parking, restrooms, and even free refreshments in a heated section of their Morton building. They have five to12 foot trees, plus wreaths, roping and tree stands.
Directions from Asheville (30-40 minute drive): Follow I-40 west to exit 20. Travel 3.1 miles on Hwy. 276 South, Turn right onto Grindstone Rd. Travel 1.3 miles on Grindstone Rd. to Hemphill Road, Turn right on Hemphill Rd. and travel .1 miles to 24 Corner Drive.

This “no-frills” tree farm is a short distance off I-26 near the North Carolina/Tennessee line. They produce Fraser fir Christmas trees for choose-and-cut. Visitors will find the farm by the large American flag painted on the barn. You’ll be surrounded by hillsides of trees and fields with cows, goats, and a llama or two. Donna and Chipper Jones and their children grow 80,000 Fraser fir on 55 acres of their 300 acre farm at elevations of 3200 to 4800 feet. Open early November through December 20, dawn to dusk.
Directions from Asheville: Take I-26 West toward Weaverville, Take Exit #50, Flag Pond Rd., Turn left at Higgins Creed Rd., Go 1/4 mile and turn right at T-intersection onto old Hwy 23., Go almost 2 miles and turn left at TN-352., Go 4.5 miles to NC line and the road becomes Hwy 212. The farm is 1/2 mile.

Asheville’s premier food event, the Taste of Asheville, will be held on November 17, 2011 at The Venue at 21 North Market Street from 7:00pm – 9:00pm.
