Winter Holiday in Asheville

January 10th, 2013 by stacy

Happy New Year ! This year marks our 10 year anniversary as owners of this Asheville Bed and Breakfast. It’s hard to believe how fast time has flown by and here we are starting the New Year off much like last. The weather has been very mild, no snow and quiet. Even though January and February are usually slow months, it’s a great time to visit. The Biltmore Estate is still magnificent and less crowded. You can purchase your 2 day ticket for $35.00 from this Asheville Inn. Guests receive a complimentary audio guide with purchase. Children 16 and younger enjoy free admission.

Asheville’s restaurants are calmer – making reservations unnecessary on most nights and giving you some extra flexibility in your schedule. With temperatures expected to continue to be mild this year, outdoor hiking and activities are abundant. Strolling the streets of Asheville is a more leisurely and relaxed experience.

Here at Pinecrest Bed and Breakfast, our rates are reduced through March 31st. We also allow for one night bookings on the weekend, except certain holidays. This year we are offering an additional 5% savings if you book 2 weekend nights (Fri, Sat, Sun) through March 31st in the Grace, Thomas Wolfe or Wible suites.

Valentine’s day falls on a Thursday this year and we expect that the weekend following Valentine’s day to be busy, so you may want to start your planning your get-away now. We would really enjoy the opportunity to host you during your visit to Asheville. Please call our toll free 888-811-3053 for additional information or book online.

Montford Music and Arts Festival in Asheville

April 11th, 2012 by stacy

The Montford Music and Arts Festival is the largest one day music and arts festival in Western North Carolina and will be in its 9th year  May 19, 2012. Head  out the door of this Asheville Inn, turn left onto Soco Street and you are there, it’s that close.

The festival has really grown  the last few years and now includes two streets in the Historic Montford District.  The homes built in Montford Most were constructed between 1890 and 1920, and include a variety of architectural influences in Asheville during the turn of the 20th century.  Any street could have a  Queen Anne, Victorian and Arts and Crafts home on it. Pinecrest Bed and Breakfast was built in 1905 and embodies a traditional tudor style architecture.

Over 100 art, crafts, food and plant vendors will be located on Montford Avenue and Soco Street.  Two stages, one on each street, will offer the perfect setting for all day fun and over 20 bands and musical acts will take the stages. The festival is an exciting way to experience one of Asheville’s most fascinating neighborhoods.

Come rain or shine and join in the fun on Saturday May 19, 2012, at 10:00am and running till 7pm. The festival is free to the public. Take in the festival while staying at this Asheville Bed and Breakfast. Reserve your room online at www.pinecrestbb.com or call 877-811-3058 to book your room.

Asheville, NC is a Vegetarian, Gluten Free and Vegan Diner’s Dream

February 28th, 2012 by stacy

Asheville, North Carolina continues to live up to it’s title of Best Vegetarian-Friendly Small City.  Asheville is a vegetarian, gluten free and vegan diner’s dream. Starting in downtown Asheville and heading north along a 2 mile stretch of road, locals affectionately refer to as the Merrimon Shuffle, you will find two exclusively vegetarian restaurants; the Laughing Seed and  Rosetta’s, Posana, a gluten free restaurant, Plant, a vegan restaurant and VegHeads, a vegetarian drive thru. Only in Asheville.  Along the way you will also go by Greenlife  Grocery store which features everything from “simple vegetarian to “raw” cuisine in a mostly local food approach. And this is just the Merrimon Shuffle. You will find many more  food co-ops, grocers and other restaurants that fulfill the needs of any dining desires.

Asheville has built itself into quite the vegetarian-friendly city, and continues to add more animal-free  dining options.  The Laughing Seed, a perennial favorite  and well-known to visitors and locals alike calls itself a global fusion vegetarian restaurant and offers an eclectic vegetarian menu.  This Asheville tradition also serves organic, seasonal, farm-to-table, vegetarian cuisine with an international flair.

Global fusion is very much alive at the Laughing Seed.  Right now, you can experience the deep, slow cooked tastes of Thailand as well as the simple, but intensely satisfying flavors of the Mediterranean and Caribbean. Sunflower seed pesto and cashew nut ricotta form a deliciously satisfying filling for their raw Spinach Pesto Manicotti.  Their sushi offering changes nightly, along with their pasta special and authentic Indian thali plate.  And nothing says “comfort food” more that their classic Harmony Bowl, Tempeh Reuben, or Tico Burrito

The new kid on the block, Plant, another farm-to-table  concept brought to Asheville by the partnership of Jason Sellars (the former chef at The Laughing Seed) and Leslie Armstrong and and Alan Berger (former owners of the best independent video store in the city — Rosebud.  Plant has only been open a short time, but is already drawing a sophisticated crowd who appreciates the quality of the food, prepared from fresh local ingredients. The farm-to-table concept is strong in Asheville and continues to grow, benefiting our local farmers and the restaurant clientele.

Plant, also a completely vegan restaurant, describes itself as “A restaurant with roots; sophisticated scratch-made food from the earth.” Nothing is served that is an animal or a by-product of any animal. This can be quite unnerving to the uninitiated, but trust us — your taste buds will revel in the new experience.  Our favorites were the Mushroom Risotto, the smoked Portabello and the truffle fries (of course).  We do hear that the Reuben and the Peppercorn encrusted Seitan are out of this world.

As a locally-owned independent business, Plant is committed to a deep concern for the environment, our individual and collective health, and ethical and compassionate lifestyles.  Success for them means that their guests feel rewarded for choosing the compassionate and exciting dining experience that Plant offers.

If you are looking for an epicurean adventure that is sure not to disappoint — shuffle up to 165 Merrimon Avenue (a short trip from this Asheville Inn.

Here at Pinecrest Inn Bed and Breakfast we strive to accommodate our guests special dietary requests. We source local and support our area farms and grocers. We also promote the restaurants that use the same approach.  For more information visit us at www.pinecrestbb.com or contact our Asheville Bed & Breakfast for reservations 888-811-3053.

Fresh Local Strawberries from Full Sun Farm Served up here at this Asheville Bed and Breakfast

May 10th, 2011 by stacy

From farm to bed and breakfast table, Asheville’s Pinecrest Bed and Breakfast works with local farmers to bring you delicious and healthy local food.  Strawberries have come in early at Full Sun Farm and we are serving them up at breakfast.  These ripe, red, juicy fruits come from our friends at the farm which is located in Sandy Mush (about 45 minutes from Asheville).

This small, family farm is run by Alex Brown and Vanessa Campbell.   They reside on the farm in an old farm house with their two young daughters, Ada and Belle.  Their mission at the farm is to nurture their family and community by growing beautiful, healthy produce through good land stewardship.  They apply organic farming methods to grow vegetables, berries, and cut flowers on their 17 acre farm. They also have three greenhouses where they start their transplants from seed and grow tomatoes, melons, and cucumbers.   All of their produce is sold locally and Alex and Vanessa are well known at the farmer’s markets.

When visiting this Asheville NC Inn this summer you will get the chance to taste their delicious blueberries in our Blueberry Waffles, their vegetables in out Farmers Market Frittata and the lovely summer squash in our zuchini bread. As Julia used to say: “Bon Appetit!”

To book a room at our Asheville B & B, visit www.pinecrestbb.com or call 888-811-3053.

Scenic Drives from this Asheville Bed and Breakfast

September 13th, 2010 by stacy

Asheville’s proximity, snuggled into the Blue Ridge Mountains, provides guests to this Asheville Bed and Breakfast easy access via car and no shortage of opportunities to see the rolling landscape from the crest of the mountains that run primarily southwest – northeast.  North on the Blue Ridge Parkway: Craggy Gardens and Mount Mitchell. A short drive north from Asheville (24 miles from downtown) will take you up about 3,000 feet in elevation to Craggy Gardens and their Visitor Center (where you can pick up a trail map) with great views to the east and to the west. There is a large picnic area and a short hike to the top of Craggy Pinnacle. Continue north on the Parkway for nine miles and turn left onto N.C. 128 to Mount Mitchell State Park. This peak, the highest east of the Mississippi River, provides 360 degree sweeping views. In addition to expansive views, the Park offers an observation tower, hiking trails, picnic areas, a natural history museum and a restaurant.  You can return to Asheville via the same route.

South on the Blue Ridge Parkway: Mount Pisgah and Graveyard Fields. Drive south on the Parkway for a gradual climb with lots of tunnels and beautiful vistas. About 15 miles from Asheville is Mount Pisgah, a favorite hiking and picnic spot. The Pisgah Inn there offers good food and views from 5,000 feet in their restaurant that is open from April-October. Continue another 10 miles to Graveyard Fields (another popular hiking spot). Just before Graveyard Fields are great views of Looking Glass Rock. Return the same route back if you want a leisurely return or drop off the Parkway via Rt. 276 to Brevard (stopping for ice cream before taking Rt. 180 back toward I-26 and Asheville.

Cold Mountain Loop
This approximately 85-mile loop drive is a beautiful, hilly, curvy drive through a very rural area around Cold Mountain, made famous by the novel and major motion picture. From Asheville, travel south on the Blue Ridge Parkway. To view the famous peak, stop at Cold Mountain overlook at Milepost 411.9. (The views from the overlook are spotty with overgrown trees blocking most of the view. For the best view, go to the Wagon Gap Road Parking area at Milepost 412.2. Then walk back north on the Parkway a short distance.) At Milepost 423.2, take N.C. Highway 215 north for 13 miles. If you want to drive an extra 8 miles roundtrip to go to the base of the hiking trail, turn right onto Little East Fork Road. Views of the mountain here are very limited. Back at N.C. 215, continue for 5 miles. N.C. 215 will turn into Highway 110. Continue 5.3 miles. In Canton, turn right onto U.S. Highway 19/23 north. Turn left onto Church Street, and right on Newfound Road. Go 1.6 miles to I-40 East to return to Asheville.

Black Mountain Rag to Chimney Rock
Take exit 64 off Interstate 40 at Black Mountain to follow the Black Mountain Rag, a scenic route named for an old fiddle tune about the dark green Lauada Firs that give the Black Mountains their name. In musical terms, a “rag” is a tune with multiple twists and curves up and down the scales. This scenic route twists and turns through the mountains like the music itself. Coming from Asheville, turn right off the exit ramp at Black Mountain and follow N.C. 9 south towards Bat Cave. The road winds along the Rocky Broad River, joining Hickory Nut Creek near the intersection of U.S. 64, U.S. 74 and N.C. 9 at Bat Cave. Turn left and follow N.C. 9/ U.S. 64 east to the village of Chimney Rock. At Chimney Rock Park you can drive to the top of the Chimney overlooking Hickory Nut Gorge. Continue past Chimney Rock to see beautiful Lake Lure. Turn around at Lake Lure and head back. Instead of returning via N.C. 9 in Bat Cave, follow signs for U.S. 74 back to Asheville.

Our beautiful Pinecrest Bed and Breakfast in Asheville is close to everything you want to do and see this fall!  For details and reservations at our inn visit www.Pinecrestbb.com.
