Chiesa a Great New Addition to the Montford Restaurant Scene

Last Saturday evening my husband and I strolled down the street to try the new neighborhood restaurant. It’s awesome that we now have another fabulous restaurant guests can venture to just steps out our door.

Chiesa, Church in Italian, is a new venture by Robert and Melisa Willingham, seasoned restaurant owners from Baltimore.  The Willingham’s felt that Asheville was the perfect setting for their opening a home-made pasta-centered, neighborhood-style Italian restaurant.

What use to stand in the place of Chiesa was a rundown vacant Church.  It was very exciting to watch the amazing transformation of this old property.  The end result is a very comfortable interior and a great addition to this historical neighborhood.

And now to the food.  The menu is small but focused and features selections from local purveyors….such as Hickory Nut Gap Farm, Dynamite Roasting, City Bakery,  Blue Moon Water,  Ultimate Ice Cream, and Mountain Foods.  One of the best features is the House-Made pasta, but it was a difficult decision between that and dessert.

We started the evening with Pancetta Crisps with Goat Cheese and Pear. It was scrumptious, especially after we drizzled a little balsamic vinegar over it.  The featured pasta the evening was Fettuccine and it was delightful. I had the sautéed  (HG) Sweet Italian Sausage with Tri-Colored Peppers over  Fettuccine and my husband had the Braised Chicken Thighs with Saffron, Mint and Green Olives. Both dishes were delicious and not heavy. The pasta could not have been more tender and light. If you need that “stuffed” feeling you won’t get that here. The portions are just perfect and not overwhelming.

chiesa logoThere were also several options for vegetarians, vegans and gluten free dinners including  Sauteed Zucchini, Carrot and Squash Ribbons in a Garlic- Shallot Lemon Butter and Fettucini with Basil- Mint Pesto and Walnut Pesto. There were several salads and seasonal soups such as Sweet Potato and Thyme Soup with Toasted Pumkin Seeds and Roasted Cauliflower and Broccoli Soup.

For dessert we were treated to a divine Housemade Bread Pudding with a Carmel Glaze. Be sure to ask for a scoop of Madagascar vanilla ice cream from Ultimate Ice Cream on the side.

We found the prices to be very reasonable, especially considering the quality of the ingredients. The wine list features Italian wines and is also very reasonable.

Asheville is renowned not only for its culinary diversity and wide selection of independent restaurants, but also for its strong farm to table dining reputation. “Eat Local” isn’t just a slogan in the mountains of Western North Carolina, it’s a way of life.

The area’s rich farm lands contribute a remarkable variety of produce, meat, fish (Trout) and dairy to the local food movement. Food critics and amateur foodies alike, agree they can taste the difference between farm fresh and frozen. There are many advantages of farm to table with the most obvious being the financial benefit to local farmers and growers. Not to mention that local chefs have endless opportunities to create seasonal inspired dishes made with ingredients harvested at their peak. Another great advantage is the freshness of the foods and the abundance of organic and free-range foods available. The area’s strong farm to table movement symbolizes fresh, healthy, and fiscally responsible living – now that’s a win, win in our culinary book.

Last week we served blueberry waffles using local blueberries and fresh strawberries with a riccota, yogurt orange sauce - both from Full Sun farm. I also prepared a blueberry slump on Sunday. Spring Flowers Blooming in Asheville, NC

peonieThe spring gardens this year are magnificent at our Asheville bed and Breakfast. Everywhere you look flowers are blooming.  We have been cutting peonies (my favorite flower) all week for the Inn.  The scent throughout the house could not be lovelier.  I will be so disappointed when we see the last of them, which unfortunately is going to be soon.  I won’t be sad too long because next up to bloom will be the Hydrangeas, another favorite of mine.  As of today, we still have blooming rhododendron, azeleas and Mountain Laurel.  In the perennial garden there are hostas, astilibe, Bellflower, Green and Gold and native Jacobs Ladder just to name a few.  We have a slope of iris and blooming rose bushes that will continue through summer.

Our perennial garden is way out of control and will need some love and care this fall.  We will be doing a lot of separating and replanting in the fall.  There is no shortage of space for us to keep expanding the perennial garden.

azaealasWe have had a lot of rain this spring which has been a blessing and a curse. The yard is really green and lush but the gardens have been plagued with a lot of weeds.  It seems the 20 yards of mulch we laid in April has been of little help keeping the weeds at bay.   Almost every day you can find my dad out in the yard on his knees working away pulling weeds. He use to maintain the entire yard and gardens, but  it’s become a little too much for him to handle so, Jose our “yard guy” has  been doing a great job keeping up with the  almost 2 acres of gardens and yard.

Just a few blocks away from this Asheville inn is the Botanical Gardens of Asheville. There you will find a collection of 600 species native to the Southern Appalachian Mountains.   The Garden is home to 50 species that are considered uncommon, rare or endangered.  Within the ten acres that comprise the Gardens, a walking trail forming a half-mile loop leads visitors across bridges spanning streams, through meadows, and over a woodland ridge to a wildflower cove. At this time of year the slopes are covered with thousands of flowers such as Trilliums, Crested Dwarf, Spring-beauties, Wild Geranium and Foamflower.  As we move into Summer the gardens will be full of members of the Aster family such as Joe-pye Weed, Blazing-star, Goldenrod and Coneflower. blooms- 6It’s also a great time to visit the North Carolina Arboretum.  The 434-acre public garden in the Pisgah National Forest is located at the entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway, just a 10 minute drive from Pinecrest Bed and Breakfast . There are over 65 acres of cultivated gardens and 10 miles of hiking and biking trails. For a short but beautiful hike we recommend the Azelea Collection Trail (.5) mile. The trail takes you through the National Native Azelea Collection and the Fern Loop. The Fern Loop takes you along a natural mountain wetland where you will encounter a Rhododendron thicket. Winter Holiday in Asheville

Happy New Year ! This year marks our 10 year anniversary as owners of this Asheville Bed and Breakfast. It’s hard to believe how fast time has flown by and here we are starting the New Year off much like last. The weather has been very mild, no snow and quiet. Even though January and February are usually slow months, it’s a great time to visit. The Biltmore Estate is still magnificent and less crowded. You can purchase your 2 day ticket for $35.00 from this Asheville Inn. Guests receive a complimentary audio guide with purchase. Children 16 and younger enjoy free admission.

Asheville’s restaurants are calmer – making reservations unnecessary on most nights and giving you some extra flexibility in your schedule. With temperatures expected to continue to be mild this year, outdoor hiking and activities are abundant. Strolling the streets of Asheville is a more leisurely and relaxed experience.

Here at Pinecrest Bed and Breakfast, our rates are reduced through March 31st. We also allow for one night bookings on the weekend, except certain holidays. Our Asheville B & B Association has a New Look !

Pinecrest Bed and Breakfast is a member of the Asheville Bed and Breakfast Association.  For over a year now the ABBA has been working on a new Logo,  new Website and an interactive Kiosk, which will be placed in our Asheville Visitor Center. Visitors can engage with a touch-screen interactive display on the kiosk and select a Bed & Breakfast based on individual needs. Guests can  can book online right at the kiosk, or make a phone call, to secure their stay.

The Asheville Bed and Breakfast Association is comprised of some of the most beautifully decorated historic Inns in Asheville.  And while each of these 16 homes is charming in their own way, they are not memories of grandmother’s house.

On May 8, 2012 we will be unveiling the new Kiosk, website and logo at  our ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Asheville Visitor Center.

Montford Music and Arts Festival in Asheville

The Montford Music and Arts Festival is the largest one day music and arts festival in Western North Carolina and will be in its 9th year  May 19, 2012. Head  out the door of this Asheville Inn, turn left onto Soco Street and you are there, it’s that close.

The festival has really grown  the last few years and now includes two streets in the Historic Montford District.  The homes built in Montford Most were constructed between 1890 and 1920, and include a variety of architectural influences in Asheville during the turn of the 20th century.  Any street could have a  Queen Anne, Victorian and Arts and Crafts home on it. Pinecrest Bed and Breakfast was built in 1905 and embodies a traditional tudor style architecture.

Over 100 art, crafts, food and plant vendors will be located on Montford Avenue and Soco Street.  Two stages, one on each street, will offer the perfect setting for all day fun and over 20 bands and musical acts will take the stages. The festival is an exciting way to experience one of Asheville’s most fascinating neighborhoods.

Asheville, NC is a Vegetarian, Gluten Free and Vegan Diner’s Dream

Asheville, North Carolina continues to live up to it’s title of Best Vegetarian-Friendly Small City.  Asheville is a vegetarian, gluten free and vegan diner’s dream. Starting in downtown Asheville and heading north along a 2 mile stretch of road, locals affectionately refer to as the Merrimon Shuffle, you will find two exclusively vegetarian restaurants; the Laughing Seed and  Rosetta’s, Posana, a gluten free restaurant, Plant, a vegan restaurant and VegHeads, a vegetarian drive thru. Only in Asheville.  Along the way you will also go by Greenlife  Grocery store which features everything from “simple vegetarian to “raw” cuisine in a mostly local food approach. And this is just the Merrimon Shuffle. You will find many more  food co-ops, grocers and other restaurants that fulfill the needs of any dining desires.

Asheville has built itself into quite the vegetarian-friendly city, and continues to add more animal-free  dining options.  The Laughing Seed, a perennial favorite  and well-known to visitors and locals alike calls itself a global fusion vegetarian restaurant and offers an eclectic vegetarian menu.  This Asheville tradition also serves organic, seasonal, farm-to-table, vegetarian cuisine with an international flair.

The new kid on the block, Plant, another farm-to-table  concept brought to Asheville by the partnership of Jason Sellars (the former chef at The Laughing Seed) and Leslie Armstrong and and Alan Berger (former owners of the best independent video store in the city — Rosebud.  Plant has only been open a short time, but is already drawing a sophisticated crowd who appreciates the quality of the food, prepared from fresh local ingredients. The farm-to-table concept is strong in Asheville and continues to grow, benefiting our local farmers and the restaurant clientele.

Plant, also a completely vegan restaurant, describes itself as “A restaurant with roots; sophisticated scratch-made food from the earth.” Nothing is served that is an animal or a by-product of any animal. This can be quite unnerving to the uninitiated, but trust us — your taste buds will revel in the new experience.  Our favorites were the Mushroom Risotto, the smoked Portabello and the truffle fries (of course).  We do hear that the Reuben and the Peppercorn encrusted Seitan are out of this world.

Art Safari a ten minute drive from this Asheville Inn

On October 29-30 take a short drive up to Weaverville, a unique small mountain town, and enjoy the Weaverville Art Safari. Twice a year, 40 artists of the Weaverville Art Safari invite you to a free, self-guided tour of artists’ home studios in the scenic area surrounding the villages of Weaverville and Barnardsville, NC. The Art Safari provides a chance to wind through the backroads and main streets of  Weaverville, Alexander and Barnardsville on a self-guided driving tour.
