Stay at this Asheville Bed and Breakfast & Check out the Latest Additions to the Local Food Scene

August 30th, 2011 by Lisa Lidback

Cúrate

At the Pinecrest Bed and Breakfast, we take our restaurant recommendations seriously. For such a small hamlet, Asheville has a remarkable array of dining experiences to offer. A lot of behind-the-scenes work goes in to ensuring our guests have a wonderful visit to our fair city. Recently, our research took us to two of the newest arrivals to the local restaurant scene — Cúrate and Storm. Both are located downtown, but are on the southern edge, stretching the definition of a “leisurely stroll” from this Asheville Bed and Breakfast. Unless your aim is to walk off dinner, you may want to consider another mode of transportation.

Cúrate is a traditional Spanish tapas bar. The atmosphere was casual and bustling with patrons. We enjoyed an array of small plate specialties from the traditional tortilla espanola (spanish potato and onion omelet) to the more creative plates like pimientos de piquillo con queso de cabra (peppers stuffed with goat cheese), espinacas a la cantalana (sauteed spinach with raisins, apples and pine nuts) and the bocadillo catalan (special-made Spanish sausage with piquillo pepper confit )and our table favorite.

Felix, one of the co-owners, takes great pride in his wine selection and we would have to say he is on the right track. After sampling several throughout the evening, we settled on a beguiling 2009 Finca Resalso – Tempranillo as our favorite — scurrying around the following day to see if our friends at the Wine Studio could procure this velvety elixir. Alas, to no avail.

You can tell that service is emphasized here. Despite a very busy night, our server took excellent care of us and guided us through the rather extensive menu selections.

Storm, which bills itself as a Rhum bar and bistro, is just around the corner from the Orange Peel (and is open late nite to satisfy your post concert hunger). In keeping with the Rhum bar theme, we quenched our hot summer thirst with a rum and ginger beer cocktail (one of many creative cocktails that they offer).

Another tantalizing menu is offered up here — we started with a cheese board that rivaled any we have had elsewhere. Moving on to some of the selections, we tried the grilled hangar steak, the East Fork Farm Lamb and the Scallops. All three dishes were wonderfully prepared. And as an added bonus Storm also offers a small plate/large plate option. With an eclectic and welcoming interior (and a great outdoor space for cooler eves), Storm is another excellent addition to the fabulous Asheville lineup of dining treasures.

And so now, we have two more stellar restaurant offerings for our guests to enjoy.

In our effort to deliver the greatest Asheville experience, we will continue keep up the research and let you know what we find. It’s hard work, but we do so with our guests in mind. For more on Pinecrest Bed & Breakfast in Asheville, visit us at www.pinecrestbb.com.

Zip up to Navitat Canopy Tours Easily from our Asheville, NC Bed and Breakfast

June 14th, 2011 by Stacy Shelley

Get ready to see the world in a new and different way. Hidden in a secluded mountain cove only 20 minutes north of Asheville and a short drive from our Asheville Bed and Breakfast, the Navitat Canopy Adventures zip line canopy tour.  Navitat Canopy Adventures takes guests on a thrilling and educational adventure high in the trees of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Fast, smooth zip lines stretch high above the forest floor; skillfully crafted platforms nest seamlessly (and securely) in large beautiful native trees; and sky-bridges span forest sections teeming with natural wonder and leading to magical surprises like a grand old blooming Tulip Poplar tree.

Navitat Asheville was recently named “one of the best in the nation” in USA TODAY’s “10 Great Ziplines Across the USA!”  I recently went on an afternoon canopy tour and have to say it was a blast.  There were 8 participants in our group and 2 guides. I thought that I would be scared and nervous….but not all.   The views were spectacular and I got to exercise my inner Tarzan (or Jane in my case).  I entered feeling a bit apprehensive about sailing through the forest, but left with my face hurting from grinning so much.

To schedule your canopy tour, contact Pinecrest Inn at 888-811-3053. For more information visit www.pinecrestbb.com or click here for inn discounts and special offers.

Summer in Asheville is around the corner and the festival season is just weeks away.  Kick off the festival season by booking at this Asheville B & B, on Friday, May 20 through Sunday, May 22 and enjoy our historic neighborhood’s own festival — just down the street.

The Montford Music and Arts Festival (on May 21) will feature music, unique art, and great food.  The festival, now in its eighth year, will expand to two stages for the music that will combine a bit of star power with a wide diversity of styles and local talent. As is tradition with the festival, each act has ties to the Montford neighborhood.

In between the music sets, festival-goers will be entertained by “Asheville Shakesperience” (the professional touring company of the Montford Park Players), dancing from the Morris Men and Ashgrove Garland (including a Maypole celebration), and the return of the Mountain Lion Chinese Dragon dancers. There will also be surprise performers and a special guest emcee or two.

The Montford Avenue stage will feature four-time Grammy award winner David Holt and the Lightning Bolts, Free Planet Radio, Billy Jonas, Firecracker Jazz band, Westsound , Braid Stream, and Free Flow. The Soco Street stage will be dedicated to some of Asheville’s outstanding, up-and-coming, musical entertainers, including Chompin at the Bit String Band, Cobra Horse, Leigh Glass Band, Pick Your Switch, Songwriters in the Round, Paul Edelman,  Dave Desmelik, Jeff Markham, South French Broads, Two of Us, and Spicy Moustache and The Flavor Saviors.

Fresh Local Strawberries from Full Sun Farm Served up here at this Asheville Bed and Breakfast

May 10th, 2011 by Stacy Shelley

From farm to bed and breakfast table, Asheville’s Pinecrest Bed and Breakfast works with local farmers to bring you delicious and healthy local food.  Strawberries have come in early at Full Sun Farm and we are serving them up at breakfast.  These ripe, red, juicy fruits come from our friends at the farm which is located in Sandy Mush (about 45 minutes from Asheville).

This small, family farm is run by Alex Brown and Vanessa Campbell.   They reside on the farm in an old farm house with their two young daughters, Ada and Belle.  Their mission at the farm is to nurture their family and community by growing beautiful, healthy produce through good land stewardship.  They apply organic farming methods to grow vegetables, berries, and cut flowers on their 17 acre farm. They also have three greenhouses where they start their transplants from seed and grow tomatoes, melons, and cucumbers.   All of their produce is sold locally and Alex and Vanessa are well known at the farmer’s markets.

When visiting this Asheville NC Inn this summer you will get the chance to taste their delicious blueberries in our Blueberry Waffles, their vegetables in out Farmers Market Frittata and the lovely summer squash in our zuchini bread. As Julia used to say: “Bon Appetit!”

To book a room at our Asheville B & B, visit www.pinecrestbb.com or call 888-811-3053.
